Vienna City Marathon: from the Reichsbrücke along the Ring to the finish
Vienna runs in April. When the city wakes up after winter, tens of thousands of runners cross the Danube at the Vienna City Marathon and run through a backdrop of palaces, parks and coffee houses. For many European runners, Vienna is the perfect first marathon abroad: close, beautiful and with a Melange afterwards.
When and where?
The Vienna City Marathon takes place every April, the next one on 18 April 2027. Around 15,000 runners have already registered for the classic marathon in 2027, more than ever before, and around 50,000 participants are expected across all events.
The course
The start is on the Reichsbrücke next to the UNO City, with a view across the Danube to the city. From there the race takes you through the Vienna you know from postcards:
- through the Prater and along the long main avenue
- past Schönbrunn Palace
- onto the Ringstrasse with the Opera, Parliament and City Hall
- and into the finish at the Burgtheater
The course is mostly flat and runs well. Watch the weather: April in Vienna can already be properly warm, and in 2026 the heat made the race tough for many. So drink early, bring a cap and do not go out too fast.
Entry
Unlike the Majors, Vienna has no ballot, you simply register. But be quick: for 2027, registration for the marathon, half marathon and relay closed as early as September, earlier than ever. If you want to run in 2028, keep an eye on registration as soon as it opens.
